Women's History Month: Aleali May

Professional photograph of Aleali May.

Born in South Central LA, she started working part-time at the Louis Vuitton store in Chicago during her marketing studies in 2010, which led to a gig for Don C. and Virgil Abloh’s RSVO Gallery.

On the back of that, and upon returning home to LA, styling gigs for Kendrick Lamar, Lil Yachty, Jaden Smith, and Wiz Khalifa followed, amongst others.

As a result of her strong connection with Jordans (collecting them since she was a child) and her interest in women's representation in streetwear, a collaboration with the brand came into fruition.

Aleali is one of two women ever to design Nike sneakers and the first woman of Filipino descent. She has since created five designs for the brand, including the Fortune 14's and the Millennial Pink 6's.

WHAT INSPIRES YOU TO CREATE?

It may sounds cliche, but life inspires me to create. I’m always inspired by my environment. Whether still or traveling the world. It’s through conversation and personal experiences that allow me to constantly be inspired to create.

WERE THERE ANY BARRIERS IN YOUR CAREER? HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THEM?

I feel like barriers always arise when I’m in the thick of it. I tend to look at roadblocks as a challenge to break through and never go around. And they always say, the higher you climb the mountain, the stronger the wind blows! I think it’s a testament to your own evolution. Each obstacle comes with a different game plan, but overall, I like to take a step back and analyze it, before taking actions to solve it head on.

WHAT'S BEEN YOUR GREATEST SUCCESS?

My greatest success is being blessed to wake up everyday, and love what I do, and live what I love to do. That is design, fashion, and steady building a world for myself where there aren’t any limitations on creativity.

WHAT WAS YOUR PROCESS OF WORKING WITH ALPHA LIKE?

Alpha has been an amazing team to work with. It feels reassuring to know there are women like myself, working behind the scenes that understand my vision and where I’m coming from. When you have a solid team with great communication, you can really achieve anything!

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO OTHER WOMEN LOOKING TO SUCCEED IN A CREATIVE FIELD?

The creative field is a slow and steady process, so having patiences is the note I’d give to other women who want to be in this field. There’s always going to be moving parts, so be prepared to just go with the ebs and flows. That way, you’re always prepared.

IF YOU WEREN'T DESIGNING, WHAT WOULD YOU BE DOING?

If I wasn’t designing, I wouldn’t know what I’d be doing, lol! I love it so much and I feel It’s apart of my mission, to create and get the girls fly!
