John Niethammer Joins Alpha

By 1961, the U.S. Department of Defense required all contractors to have a written quality control plan in place to avoid manufacturing issues and ensure compliance with all terms of the contract. Alpha’s president, Samuel Gelber, knew Alpha didn’t have this type of expertise on staff and sought a new partner who could fill this role. On recommendation from his trusted advisor, Herman “Breezy” Wynn, John Niethammer was hired in February 1961. Niethammer had served in the Air Force and had prior experience in quality control.

Niethammer was able to help Alpha Industries put a quality control plan in place to fulfill the requirements of the government. With encouragement from Gelber, Niethammer then became involved in the contract bidding process and was responsible for gathering the price data needed to submit a competitive bid to the government for contracts. He went on to play a major role in the expansion of the company in the coming decades and eventually became one of the company’s chief operating officers.
