Alpha has produced the iconic MA-1 flight jacket for more than 50 years, setting the standard for authentic, military-inspired outerwear. True to the details of the original, the MA-1 bomber jacket is still one of our top-selling styles to date.
Introduced in the early 1950s, the MA-1 became the classic flight jacket of the jet age and is arguably the most popular military jacket of all time. Designed for use in cold weather climates, MA-1 jackets were originally issued to U.S. Air Force, Navy pilots and flight crews around 1949 and featured 100% wool knit collar, waistband and cuffs. Other features of the jacket included a tab the oxygen mask was clipped to, tabs to hold the headset wires in place and the original U.S. Air Force decal. Alpha Industries' first government contract for the MA-1 was awarded in 1963 when significant revisions were made to improve the design. It was around this time that the jacket’s signature reversible Indian Orange lining was added as a safety feature to make downed aircrews more visible to rescue personnel. The oxygen mask webbing and radio tabs were also removed from updated MA-1 styles because new technology delivered oxygen and radio directly to pilots’ helmets.
Alpha started producing the MA-1 flight jacket for the civilian population in the 1970s and has since developed a variety of styles to compliment the original. Lightweight variations of the classic MA-1 like the L-2B, Burnett, Refueler, and the Richardson offer stylish, functional outerwear alternatives perfect for milder spring temps.
