Lincoln Memorial I have a dream speech

Today the United States celebrates a national holiday to honor the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. King was a famous activist who was one of the heroes in the African-American Civil Rights Movement. King led peaceful protests such as the Montgomery Bus Boycott and founded the Southern Christian Leadership Conference that organized demonstrations against segregation throughout the country. King worked with politicians to try and pass legislation for equal rights for all. In 1963 he led a demonstration called the March on Washington and gave his famous "I Have a Dream" speech in front of the Lincoln Memorial. More than anything Dr. King wanted to see a world where there was no racism and all were treated equal. He went on to win the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts. His fight was cut short when he was assassinated on April 4, 1968, in Memphis, TN.

Dr. King was a true hero who exemplified bravery and was willing to sacrifice for what was right. In addition to a national holiday, a memorial was built to honor the legacy of this great leader. It opened in October 2011 and is located on the Tidal Basin in Washington, DC.
