Each year on February 2 the U.S. celebrates Groundhog Day. On this day, a groundhog comes out of his winter burrow to "look for" his shadow. If he sees it that means we are in for six more weeks of winter weather. If he does not see his shadow that indicates spring is right around the corner. The biggest U.S. celebration takes place in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. Each year more than 40,000 people turn out to see the groundhog named Punxsutawney Phil pop out to forecast the weather. The holiday's historical origins are actually quite international. According to the German lore, Candlemas is the day on which the groundhog peeps out of his winter quarters. In Scotland the poem reads "If Candle-mas Day is bright and clear, There'll be two winters in the year."
