When the American Revolutionary War broke out the colonists didn’t have an army to fight against the British. Instead each had a militia made up of part-time civilian soldiers. As the conflict intensified, they started to train small regiments. Then on June 14, 1775, the Second Continental Congress voted to establish a Continental Army to defend all 13 colonies. The small regiments that had been formed were absorbed into this new group. On June 15, 1775, George Washington was voted the Commander-in-Chief by the Congress and four departments were formed to support the army. The departments would later become the Adjutant General's Corps, the Army Corps of Engineers, the Finance Corps and the Quartermasters Corps. The Continental Army went through several transformations until 1784 when it finally became the United States Army. This was the precursor to the elite fighting force that we know today.

As the largest branch, the Army makes up almost half of the entire U.S. Armed Forces. The Army performs land-based military operations by participating in, or supporting, combat. They also aid humanitarian and disaster relief efforts. The U.S. Army guards national installations, properties and interests around the world. There are more than 1.5 million soldiers and support personnel as part of the organization. Learn more fun facts about the U.S. Army in our Alpha 101.

To celebrate 240 years of history there have been many events and parties honoring the U.S. Army. This past week a cake-cutting ceremony was held at the U.S. Capitol featuring the official birthday cake (see above). Throughout the month there have also been festivals, baseball nights, shows and balls to recognize the occasion. Get all the latest birthday news and photos, plus take the U.S. Army quiz at the official 240th birthday site.

We leave you with a 240th birthday message from the Chief of Staff of the Army and Sgt. Maj. of the Army Daniel Dailey.
