A New Class of U.S. Navy Battleships

Today was a special day for the U.S. Navy. Their newest ship, the USS Zumwalt (DDG 1000), went from being a “pre-commissioning unit” to an active member of the fleet of the Navy. The ship was welcomed into service by more than three thousand people including the Secretary of the Navy, the Chief of Naval Operations, the mayor of Baltimore, MD, and members of the Zumwalt Family.

The USS Zumwalt (DDG 1000) was named for Admiral Elmo R. Zumwalt, Jr., who entered the U.S. Naval Academy in 1939 and went on to serve during several conflicts. He quickly rose up the ranks and became the Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) in 1970. During his leadership the Navy became stronger and more diverse. He instituted new regulations about the importance of treating all sailors with respect no matter their rank and the role of family in a serviceman’s life. He was said to have pushed the Navy forward to meet the challenges of the 20th Century.

The stealth ship that honors his legacy is similar to the man himself in that it is pushing the U.S. Navy forward in the 21st Century. It is the first in a new class of ships that utilizes new technologies. Weighing in at over 15,000 tons, the Zumwalt has enough power to run a medium-sized city. It has an unprecedented level of automation enabled by a sophisticated information network that will allow it to be agile and precise in battle. It only makes sense that its motto is Pax Propter Vim, Peace through Power.

Alpha Industries was proud to be one of the sponsors of the commissioning and to welcome this elite battleship officially into active duty. We were also thrilled to be able to make limited-edition leather bombers to commemorate the event. Take a look at pics of the ceremony and the jacket.
